Maltodextrin

Ultra-Processed

Also known as: maltrin, corn maltodextrin, rice maltodextrin

What is Maltodextrin?

A highly processed carbohydrate made from starch (corn, rice, potato, or wheat). The body digests it almost as fast as pure glucose, causing rapid blood sugar spikes.

Maltodextrin is rapidly digested and can give fast energy, which is why it appears in sports drinks and workout supplements. However, it has no nutritional value beyond calories and can add calories without making you full, potentially contributing to weight gain. Used occasionally in small amounts it isn't inherently bad, especially for athletes needing quick carbs. But in heavily processed diets, frequent intake can push unhealthy patterns like blood sugar swings and weight gain. If a product lists maltodextrin, it's a sign the food is processed. Prioritize whole carbs like fruit, whole grains, and tubers where possible.
